National Standards for Physical Education (see pp.55-56)

 

1.   Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of activities.

 

    Intent: movement competence implies the development of sufficient ability to enjoy   participation in physical activities and establishes a foundation to facilitate continued motor skill acquisition and increased ability to engage in appropriate motor patterns         in daily physical activities.

 

    2. Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

 

Intent: to develop the use of cognitive information to understand and enhance motor skill acquisition and performance.

 

3. Participates regularly in physical activity.

 

Intent: to establish patterns of regular participation in meaningful physical activity.

 

4. Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

 

Intent: to develop health-related fitness behavior.

 

5. Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical-activity settings. 

 

Intent: to learn rules and conduct that promotes personal and group success in activity settings; and, to develop respect for individual similarities and differences through positive interaction among participants in physical activity.

 

6. Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.

 

Intent: to develop awareness of the intrinsic values and benefits of participation in physical activity that provides personal meaning.
